Practical Workshop on Image Quality Management – Ensuring the image quality in Cultural Heritage digitization
The aim of digitization efforts in libraries and archives is to make cultural heritage artifacts accessible online and preserve them for the future. A well-structured quality management process is an essential requirement for achieving this goal.
During the two-day practical workshop titled *“Image Quality Management in Digitization”*, led by Volker Jansen, Head of Development at Zeutschel and an expert in cultural heritage digitization, seven professionals from libraries and archives across the DACH region (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland) improved their knowledge on *”Measuring and Evaluating Image Quality”* and began applying these principles in practice.
On the first day, Volker introduced the participants to the theoretical background of image quality. The focus was on the key quality parameters described in the standard ISO 19264-1:2021 and the methods for accurately measuring these parameters. Volker explained the importance of specific targets used to ensure image quality.
For comprehensive quality management, the UTT Target, Color Checker SG, and Object Level Target are particularly important. Using the Zeutschel OS QM-Tool, Volker demonstrated how modern image quality analysis software supports the process and how it integrates with scanning software to create an efficient workflow.
In the practical session, participants were able to directly apply their theoretical knowledge. Zeutschel provided scanners of various formats and technologies, as well as the OmniScan software and the OS QM-Tool, enabling participants to conduct measurements, evaluate results, and interpret data according to the ISO standard and other quality management guidelines like Metamorfoze. The practical training also included creating custom parameter sets, scanner and camera calibration, and setting up a digitization workflow including a continuous quality monitoring with each scan.
The workshop offered participants a successful blend of knowledge transfer and hands-on exercises. “The mix of theory and practice was ideal,” was the general feedback. Volker Jansen’s expertise, combined with the technologies provided by Zeutschel, gave participants valuable insights and enhanced their practical skills, equipping them to secure the digitization and long-term preservation of cultural assets at the highest quality standards.
